Monte Vista is 0-7 against De La Salle since November of 2016 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Monte Vista Mustangs will be playing in front of their home fans against the De La Salle Spartans at 7:00 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, both teams will really light up the scoreboard.
Last Friday, Monte Vista was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 39-35 to Clayton Valley Charter. Monte Vista has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.
Despite their defeat, Monte Vista saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Julian McMahan, who rushed for 153 yards and three touchdowns, was perhaps the best of all. Another player making a difference was Jacob Shehata, who picked up 117 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Meanwhile, De La Salle entered their tilt with El Cerrito with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. De La Salle strolled past El Cerrito with points to spare on Friday, taking the game 31-12. Given De La Salle's advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 13th, while El Cerrito is ranked 80th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Monte Vista has not been sharp recently, as they've lost four of their last five games, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-4 record this season. As for De La Salle, their victory was their sixth straight at home, bumping their overall record up to 6-2.
Monte Vista was dealt a bruising 41-3 defeat at the hands of De La Salle when the teams last played back in October of 2022. Will Monte Vista have more luck at home instead of on the road?
