Basketball Game Preview: Wharton Tigers vs. Bay City Blackcats

Wharton has gone 10-0 against Bay City recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Tuesday. The Wharton Tigers will welcome the Bay City Blackcats at 6:30 p.m. Wharton is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 55.5 points per game this season.

Having struggled with three losses in a row, Wharton turned things around against Needville on Friday. They came out on top against the Bluejays by a score of 52-39.

Wharton's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Jacoryan Dickerson, who went 9 for 14 on his way to 19 points in addition to eight rebounds and five blocks. Dickerson is on a roll when it comes to boards, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jameir Hearne-Robinson, who dropped a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds.

Wharton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.

Meanwhile, Bay City suffered their biggest defeat since December 5, 2024 on Friday. 2025 welcomed they with a 60-38 loss courtesy of La Marque. While losing is never fun, the Blackcats can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 841st, while the Cougars are ranked 127th).

Wharton's win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 16-8. As for Bay City, their loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 7-5.

Everything came up roses for Wharton against Bay City when the teams last played back in November of 2022, as the squad secured a 92-37 victory. Does Wharton have another victory up their sleeve, or will Bay City turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
