The Pamlico County Hurricanes will take on the East Carteret Mariners at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Pamlico County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.1 runs per game this season.
Pamlico County is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering New Bern just ended the team's nine-game winning streak on Thursday. They fell just short of the Bears by a score of 3-2. The Hurricanes were red-hot at the plate heading into the game (they scored no less than ten runs in the five contests prior), but the Bears' pitchers proved too tough.
Pamlico County saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Peyton Robinson, who scored a run while going 1-for-3. Another was Hailey Shamblin, who scored a run while going 3-for-3.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for East Carteret, who bounced back after a loss on the road on Tuesday. They had just enough and edged out Northside - Pinetown 8-7. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Mariners have posted since April 23, 2024.
Amilya Lewis was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching seven innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off five hits. Lewis was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of her four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Mali Peck was incredible, going 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. Grayson Gillikin was another key player, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while going 1-for-4.
East Carteret hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post two or more strikeouts.
East Carteret pushed their record up to 7-8 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 13.0 runs over those games. As for Pamlico County, their loss dropped their record down to 11-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Tuesday as neither team is afraid to steal. Pamlico County has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 3.8 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like East Carteret struggles in that department as they've been averaging 4.1 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Everything went Pamlico County's way against East Carteret when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Pamlico County made off with a 17-0 win. Will the Hurricanes repeat their success, or do the Mariners have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
