After flying high against the Buena Colts last Tuesday, the Sunnyside Blue Devils came back down to earth. Sunnyside fell just short of Cesar Chavez by a score of 51-48. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest defeat Sunnyside has suffered yet this season.
Sunnyside's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Nayeli Nidez-Acu?a, who dropped a double-double on 21 points and 22 rebounds, and Dora Medina who scored ten points along with five rebounds and two steals. Nidez-Acu?a hasn't dropped below eight rebounds for five straight games. Another player making a difference was Alana Felix, who scored three points along with nine assists and five rebounds.
Cesar Chavez's victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Sophia Doromal, who scored 17 points along with five rebounds and three steals. Doromal is absolutely dominating the steal category: she's posted at least two every time she's taken the court this season. The team also got some help courtesy of Dalaiha Madden, who scored 14 points along with eight rebounds.
Sunnyside's defeat ended a four-game streak of away wins and brought them to 17-3. As for Cesar Chavez, their victory was their seventh straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-2.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sunnyside won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Ironwood Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on January 12th. Ironwood Ridge will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Arizona Rankings (they are ranked 90th, while Sunnyside is ranked 14th). Cesar Chavez will have some time to savor their win since their next game is a little ways off: they'll take on Shadow Ridge at 7:00 p.m. on January 25th.
