AAA District 16 recap September 10, 2013
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Memphis Central, who took down 162nd ranked Memphis Central, 26-24.
Whitehaven was able to crack the Top 25 in the state rankings this week after defeating White Station. The Tigers came in at 23 in the state poll after placing at number 35 last week.
The Spartans' dynamic duo of Cedrick Wilson Jr. and Dequan Shields proved tough for Whitehaven to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Wilson Jr. threw for 83 yards and Shields had 41 yards receiving.
White Station's dynamic duo of Wilson Jr. and Shields proved to be unstoppable against Rodney Saulsberry's team, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week.
Shields was the best receiver in AAA District 16 this week as Joe Rocconi's team lost to the Tigers.
Marvellous Jackson was the best running back in the league this week. In 10 carries, he ran for 77 yards as Memphis East lost to Whitehaven. DeVante Turner also contributed to the rushing game with 34 yards on the ground.
Wilson Jr. put up the best numbers through the air as White Station fell to the Tigers.
Fans will be treated to a premier battle in the secondary when the Spartans' Eldridge Thompson goes up against the Mustangs' Kyland Tate.
One of the league's premier quarterbacks will go head-to-head with its top pass rusher when White Station and Memphis East face off next week. Wilson Jr. has thrown for 363 yards and 4 touchdowns this season, while Ray Taylor has plagued opposing QBs to the tune of 1.0 sacks.
Next week's game between the Spartans and Marcus Wimberly's team will feature a good passing match up as Wilson Jr. will test his arm against Tate's defensive ability.
The Warriors are currently in fifth, while Whitehaven is in first.
There should be lots of points scored when the Mustangs and White Station face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Memphis East comes in having scored 74 this season, while the Spartans have scored 54. The Mustangs scored 32 points last week as they beat Overton.
Melrose moved up to 145 from 194 in the state rankings this week, the biggest jump in AAA District 16. The Golden Wildcats climbed the ranks as a result of topping Memphis Central 26-24.
