Plant has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will challenge the Sumner Stingrays at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Florida (Plant is ranked 74th, while Sumner is ranked 63rd).
With a playoff game on the line, Plant rose to the challenge on Friday. They came out on top against Dr. Phillips by a score of 28-21. The score was all tied up 14-14 at the break, but Plant was the better team in the second half.
Among those leading the charge was Waltez Clark, who rushed for 132 yards and three touchdowns while picking up 7.8 yards per carry. Clark is on a roll when it comes to rushing touchdowns, as he's now punched in two or more in the last three games he's played.
Meanwhile, Sumner waltzed into Friday's matchup with five straight wins but they left with six. They took down Durant 40-25. Sumner pushed the score to 33-10 by the end of the third, a deficit Durant cut but never quite recovered from.
It was another big night for Greg Smith III, who threw for 234 yards and five touchdowns while completing 81.3% of his passes. Charlie Bartling also deserves a shout-out for his two touchdowns.
Plant pushed their record up to 10-2 with that victory, which was their sixth straight at home. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-10 Chamberlain and 1-9 Jefferson (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 35.5% over those games). As for Sumner, their win bumped their record up to 11-1.
Plant came out on top in a nail-biter against Sumner in their previous meeting back in November of 2022, sneaking past 37-34. The rematch might be a little tougher for Plant since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
