Baseball Recap: Ursuline Gets the Win

While Ursuline's win against Struthers wasn't quite the blowout it was the last time the pair played, they still came out on top. The Fighting Irish sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 9-8 victory over the Wildcats on Thursday. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Fighting Irish have posted since May 16, 2024.

Anthony Triveri was a major factor no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two hits in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in all five of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. Ursuline is undefeated when Triveri posts two or more runs, but 3-7 otherwise.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on AJ Snyder, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Ursuline's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is undefeated (and 2-7 when he doesn't). Marc DelliQuadri also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.

Ursuline kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.2 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 matches they've averaged 11.4.

Ursuline has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four games. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.5 runs over those games. As for Struthers, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season.

Ursuline will face off against Marlington at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Struthers, they will challenge Ravenna at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.
