The Garner Trojans will venture away from home to take on the Hoggard Vikings at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Garner is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10.2 runs per game this season.
Garner proved they can win big on Friday (they won by 11) and on Tuesday they proved they can win the close ones too. They skirted past Cleveland 2-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Trojans have posted since May 24, 2024.
Gabriella Czuczuk was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, tossing seven innings while giving up just one earned run off six hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one RBI.
In other batting news, Gaby Mizelle was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and one run. That's the most doubles she has posted since back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, while it was Hoggard who put the first runs on the board on Tuesday, it was Topsail who put up more. The Vikings took an 8-3 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pirates.
Hoggard saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Macey Ciamillo, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and two doubles. Logan Ulrich was another, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Garner has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.4 runs over those games. As for Hoggard, they now have a losing record of 8-9.
Hoggard's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Garner hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .411. It's a different story for Hoggard, though, as they've only averaged .232. Will they be able to contain Garner's hitters?
Garner was able to grind out a solid win over Hoggard when the teams last played back in May of 2024, winning 5-0. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Trojans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
