Basketball Recap: Heritage Christian Takes a Loss

Heritage Christian was the 53-50 winner over Hammond Academy of Science & Tech when they last played one another back in November of 2023, but their luck changed this time around. The Heritage Christian Defenders took a 42-35 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Hammond Academy of Science & Tech Hawks on Monday. The game marked the Defenders' lowest-scoring matchup so far this season.

When it comes to explaining why Heritage Christian lost, don't look at Andrew Regnerus. Despite the final result, he went 6 for 11 on his way to 16 points. The contest was Regnerus' fifth in a row with at least ten points.

Hammond Academy of Science & Tech got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jalil Powell out in front who went 8 of 15 on his way to 18 points and five assists. The dominant performance gave Powell a new career-high in assists. The team also got some help courtesy of Gabriel Reyes, who posted nine points in addition to five boards and three steals.

Heritage Christian's loss dropped their record down to 4-2. As for Hammond Academy of Science & Tech, the win got them back to even at 2-2.

Heritage Christian will hit the road for the first time this season to take on DeMotte Christian at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Hammond Academy of Science & Tech, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 56-35 defeat against Washington Township on the 10th.
