Island Coast (Cape Coral, Fla.) beat Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.) 55-0 while riding the arm of
Kurt Benkert, who tossed five touchdown passes.
After taking the lead on a Benkert touchdown pass to
T.J. Johnson in the first quarter, the Gators led 35-0 at the half.
Island Coast expanded its lead to 55 points entering the fourth quarter. IC scored three times in the third, including once on a
JD Irons touchdown run.
With the win the Cape Coral school extended its winning streak to six games. The Gators defeated the Green Wave 24-21 last week.
Coming into the game Island Coast had allowed 18.7 points per game this year. The defense really stepped up, holding the Vikings well below their season average of 13.7 points scored per game.
The Gators also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 44-7.
Island Coast (6-1) will play a 6A District 11 game against South Fort Myers next week, while Bishop Verot (1-7) will take on North Fort Myers also in a 6A District 11 game.
