The Crater Comets will head out on the road to face off against the Wilsonville Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: both teams posted some lofty point totals in their previous games.
Crater fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They came out on top against South Eugene by a score of 35-26 on Friday.
Valentin Rodriguez was his usual excellent self, rushing for 345 yards and five touchdowns while picking up 8.4 yards per carry. Rodriguez was no stranger to the big play, taking off on a dash that went for 50 yards.
Meanwhile, Wilsonville entered their tilt with Canby with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Wilsonville simply couldn't be stopped on Friday as they easily beat Canby 49-22 at home. The result was nothing new for Wilsonville, who have now won seven games by 27 points or more so far this season.
Mark Wiepert and Kallen Gutridge were among the main playmakers for Wilsonville as the former picked up 155 receiving yards and four touchdowns and the latter threw for 349 yards and six touchdowns while picking up 11.3 yards per attempt. Gutridge hasn't dropped below three passing touchdowns for five straight games. Nick Crowley did his part to keep the secondary busy, picking up 109 receiving yards.
Crater has been performing well recently as they've won four of their last five contests, which provided a massive bump to their 4-5 record this season. As for Wilsonville, their win was their 14th straight at home (dating back to last season), bumping their overall record up to 8-1.
Friday's match might be decided on the ground as these two are both standouts in the run game. Crater has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 266.7 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Wilsonville struggles in that department as they've been averaging 171.4 per game. It's looking like Friday's match might have some serious battles in the trenches.
Everything came up roses for Crater against Wilsonville when the teams last played back in September of 2019 as the team secured a 40-0 win. Does Crater have another victory up their sleeve, or will Wilsonville turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
