The Vance County Vipers will wrap up 2023 with a road trip to face off against the Northern Nash Knights at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Vance County will be coming into the matchup with an undefeated record on the line.
Two weeks ago, Vance County really took it to Northern Durham for the full four quarters, racking up a 65-10 victory on the road. The match was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 48-8.
Vance County relied on the efforts of Sarah Baldwin, who scored 14 points along with seven rebounds and four steals, and NaZiya Vandergrift , who scored 15 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. The contest was Baldwin's third in a row with at least ten points. Destiny Timberlake was another key contributor, scoring seven points along with six rebounds and six steals.
Meanwhile, Northern Nash came up short against SouthWest Edgecombe on Thursday and fell 50-40. While losing is never fun, Northern Nash can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 367th, while SouthWest Edgecombe is ranked 151st).
Vance County's victory bumped their record up to 4-0. As for Northern Nash, they bumped their record down to 1-4 with that loss, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season.
Everything came up roses for Vance County against Northern Nash in their previous meeting back in December of 2022 as the team secured a 63-26 win. Will Vance County repeat their success, or does Northern Nash have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
