Heading into the 2011 baseball season, you won't find many high school pitchers with more experience than Farragut's Philip Pfeifer III.
The MaxPreps National Junior Baseball Player of the Year, Pfeifer is a veteran of international competition. He recently landed a spot on the Team USA 18U team, marking the third straight year that Pfeifer has made a national team. Last year for the United States' gold-medal winning team at the Pan Am games, Pfeifer was 2-0 with 18 strikeouts - second on the team only to Jameson Taillon who was the No. 1 high school pitcher selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
At the high school level, Pfeifer has been almost untouchable in his three years on the Admiral varsity team. In going 41-1 in three seasons, Pfeifer has struck out 415 batters. Farragut has won state titles in all three of those seasons with Pfeifer going 16-0 this year. Already a member of the MaxPreps All-American Team, Pfeifer was also recognized by Louisville Slugger as the National Pitcher of the Year.
Pfeifer joins Westminster Christian's David Thompson and Lakewood's J.P. Crawford as Player of the Year winners. Thompson is the MaxPreps National Sophomore Baseball Player of the Year while Crawford is the Freshman Player of the Year.
Thompson is already in the midst of a spectacular career in South Florida where he has drawn comparisons to Alex Rodriguez, a Westminster Christian alum. With 19 home runs this year, Thompson has already tied the state record for homers in a season. He's led the Warriors to two straight Florida 2A state championships.
Crawford was one of the top players on a Lakewood team loaded with quality athletes. The team's starting shortstop, Crawford batted .410, had 50 hits and scored 49 runs in helping the Lancers post a 28-6 overall record.
MaxPreps Junior All-American Baseball Team
Trevor Fitts, Pelham (Pelham, Ala.), Pitcher - The Birmingham News Metro Player of the Year, Fitts struck out 151 batters in 92 innings pitched and was 14-0 with a 0.91 ERA. He has committed to play at Mississippi State.
Scott Hoffman, Desert Ridge (Mesa, Ariz.), Pitcher - The state player of the year by both the Arizona Republic and the East Valley Tribune, Hoffman batted .457 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI and was 13-0 with a 2.01 ERA and 76 strikeouts for the state champs.
Henry Owens, Edison (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Pitcher - Owens earned All-Orange County honors from the Orange County Register for the second straight season as he went 9-2 with a 1.67 ERA and 115 strikeouts while earning pitcher of the year honors in the Sunset League.
Dillon Peters, Indianapolis Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.), Pitcher - The Player of the Year on the Indy Star Super Team, Peters was 12-1 with a 0.63 ERA and 154 strikeouts in 89.1 innings pitched for Cathedral. Peters has committed to play at the University of Texas.

Philip Pfeifer, Farragut

Phillip Pfeifer, Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.), Pitcher - Already a three-time all-state player, Pfeiffer led Farragut to its third straight Tennessee AAA state title by finishing 16-0 with a 1.26 ERA. He threw a one-hitter in the state finals with 14 strikeouts and had 165 strikeouts and only 26 walks in 96 innings pitched. Heading into his senior year, Pfeiffer has a record of 41-1 with 415 strikeouts.
Zach Davies, Mesquite (Gilbert, Ariz.), Pitcher - An all-state pick by the Arizona Republic and an all-area selection by the East Valley Tribune, Davies was 9-1 with 1.58 ERA for Mesquite. He had 84 strikeouts in 75.1 innings pitched and also batted .318 with 26 RBI, 10 doubles and 6 home runs.
Tyler Davis, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose, Calif.), Pitcher - Davis was unflappable on the mound for Archbishop Mitty, which finished ranked No. 3 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 final rankings. He was 11-0 and struck out 82 batters in 78 innings with a 2.87 ERA.
Jose Fernandez, Alonso (Tampa, Fla.), Pitcher - First Team All-Suncoast by the Tampa Tribune, Fernandez was 10-1 with a 0.87 ERA for the Ravens. He struck out 107 batters in 72.1 innings pitched. He also batted .408 with 5 home runs and 29 RBI.
Brandon Sedell, American Heritage (Plantation, Fla.), Catcher - Selected as the top 3A player in the state of Florida by the Dairy Farmers Association, Sedell led American Heritage with his prowess at the plate as he batted .612 (52-for-85) with 40 runs, 46 RBI, 11 doubles and 9 home runs. He was also named to the All-Broward County team by the Miami Herald and he was the small school MVP by the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel.
Kevin Cron, Mountain Pointe (Phoenix, Ariz.), Catcher - An all-state pick by the Arizona Republic, Cron tied a state record by blasting 22 home runs. He batted .491 on the season with 24 runs, 54 hits, 10 doubles and 52 RBI to go with his prodigious home run total. Committed to play at TCU following his senior year.
Cole Lankford, Lamar (Houston, Texas), Catcher - Committed to play at Texas A&M after next year, Lankford was first team all-state and first team All-Greater Houston by the Houston Chronicle. He batted .541 with 10 home runs and 68 RBI.
Craig Shirley, Northview (Dothan, Ala.), First Base - The area player of the year by the Dothan Eagle, Shirley was also an all-state selection in Alabama after batting .477 with 18 home runs, 72 RBI, 15 doubles and 48 runs scored.
Dan Vogelbach, Bishop Verot (Fort Myers, Fla.), First Base - Named the Player of the Year by the Fort Myers News Preps, Vogelbach batted .551 with nine home runs, 41 runs scored and 39 RBI. He also had 11 doubles and four triples.
Nicky Delmonico, Farragut (Knoxville, Tenn.), Infield - One of the top players in the class of 2011, Delmonico is a veteran of Team USA play and was a key factor in Farragut's three straight state championships in Tennessee. He batted .485 with 18 home runs 75 RBI, 12 doubles, 66 hits and 66 runs scored.
Mikal Hill, Mallard Creek (Charlotte, N.C.), Infield - The Charlotte Observer Player of the Year, batted .566 with 39 RBI, 9 doubles and 7 home runs. He also stole 18 bases and has committed to play at South Carolina.
Derek Odell, Canyon (Canyon, Texas), Infield - The Amarillo area player of the year, Odell was also the district 3-4A MVP while batting .568 with 7 home runs and 66 RBI.
Ricky Santiago, Flanagan (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), Infield - Santiago helped lead Flanagan to the 6A state title in Florida as he batted .420 with 23 RBI, 5 doubles and 4 home runs. He was also named to the All-Broward County team by the Miami Herald.
Tyrone Wiggins, El Capitan (Lakeside, Calif.), Infield - Filled up the stat sheet for the Division III champions in the San Diego Section. He led the section with 47 RBI and batted .462 with 13 home runs and 48 runs scored. Named to the all-section team.
Dante Bichette Jr., Orangewood Christian (Maitland, Fla.), Infield - Named the Central Florida Player of the Year by the Orlando Sentinel, Bichette batted .597 with 36 runs, 37 RBI, and 9 home runs. The son of the former Major Leaguer by the same name, Bichette has committed to play at Georgia.
Tim Barry, Oak Forest (Oak Forest, Ill.), Outfield - One of the more prolific home run hitters in the country, Barry heads into his senior year with 41 career home runs, including 17 during his junior season. He drove in 43 runs this year to give him 170 in his career. An all-state choice for the third time by the Chicago Tribune, Barry batted .578 and scored 46 runs.
Chance Bolcerek, Brenham (Brenham, Texas), Outfield - A member of the Houston Chronicle's All-Greater Houston team, as well as the Class 4A all-state team, Bolcerek batted .549 for the state champion Cubs while scoring 55 runs, with 73 hits and 62 RBI. The District 18-4A MVP also had 19 doubles and 10 home runs.
Daniel Arellano, Centennial (Corona, Calif.), Outfield - An All-Southern Section Division I selection and a member of the Riverside Press-Enterprise all-area team, Arrelano batted .427 with 36 RBI, 31 runs scored, 5 doubles and 12 home runs. He also had a 9-3 mound record with 67 strikeouts in 76.2 innings pitched.
Grant McCabe, Cherry Creek (Greenwood Village, Colo.), Outfield - One of only two juniors on the All-Colorado team by the Denver Post, McCabe batted .598 for the Bruins with 43 runs, 49 hits, 23 RBI, 11 doubles, 6 triples and a home run.
Brett Austin, Providence (Charlotte, N.C.), Outfield - The Southwestern 4A Conference Player of the Year, Austin was also named to the All-Observer team after batting .436 with 12 home runs, 8 doubles, 2 triples and 29 RBI.
Daniel Norris, Science Hill (Johnson City, Tenn.), Outfield - Although known mostly for his pitching, Norris was also a strong outfielder at Science Hill. Named the area player of the year for the second straight season by the Johnson City Press, Norris had an 8-0 record (25-1 in his career) with a 1.96 ERA. He struck out 140 batters in 64.1 innings pitched and walks only 37. he also batted .483 with 55 RBI, 7 home runs, 16 doubles and 10 triples.
Cole Gleason, Red Mountain (Mesa, Ariz.), All-Purpose - An all-state pick, Gleason was one of the top home run hitters in the country as he blasted 18 on the season. he had a .514 batting average with 46 runs, 54 hits, 57 RBI and 14 doubles.
Dylan Bundy, Owasso (Owasso, Okla.), All-Purpose - The two-time state player of the year by Gatorade, Bundy transferred to Owasso for his junior season after playing two years at Sperry. The move to tougher competition did nothing to dim Bundy's stats as he went 11-1 with a 1.58 ERA and 164 strikeouts in 79.2 innings pitched. He also batted .444 with 51 RBI and seven home runs for the Rams, who were the state 6A runners up. Bundy has committed to play at Texas next year.
J.D. Davis, Elk Grove (Elk Grove, Calif.), All-Purpose - Helped Elk Grove reach the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I championship game and earned All-Metro honors by the Sacramento Bee after batting .483 with 62 RBI, 56 hits, 10 doubles and 8 home runs.
Blake Swihart, Cleveland (Rio Rancho, N.M.), All-Purpose - An All-Metro first baseman as a sophomore at Rio Rancho, Swihart transferred to Cleveland, switched to catcher and didn't miss a beat. Named to the 5A all-state team.
Michael Kelly, West Boca Raton (Boca Raton, Fla.), All-Purpose - All-county by the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel, Kelly went 10-4 with a 2.06 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 76 innings pitched. He also batted .323 with 17 RBI and has committed to play at Florida.
MaxPreps Sophomore All-American Baseball Team
Courtney Hawkins, Carroll (Corpus Christi, Texas), Pitcher - The MVP of the 5A state tournament, Hawkins also earned All-South Texas honors by the Caller Times. He was 9-1 on the season with a 2.31 ERA. he struck out 111 batters in 72 innings and also batted .383 with 6 home runs and 36 RBI.
Marc Brakeman, Shorecrest Prep (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Pitcher - Named the Pitcher of the Year in Pinellas County by the Tampa Tribune, Brakeman led Shorecrest to the Florida 2A state finals as he struck out 115 batters in 76 innings and had a 1.75 ERA.
Jake Thompson, Rockwall-Heath (Rockwall, Texas), Pitcher - Besides going 9-2 on the mound with a 1.52 ERA, Thompson also batted .444 with 54 RBI and 7 home runs for Rockwall-Heath, which was ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps at one point in the season. Named to the Texas coaches all-state team as well.
Andre Martinez, Archbishop McCarthy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Pitcher - Helped lead Archbishop McCarthy to the 4A state championship by going 9-2 on the mound with a 2.27 ERA and 73 strikeouts. Named to the All-Broward County Team by the Miami Herald.
Ryan Phillips, Rock Bridge (Columbia, Mo.), Pitcher - Named to the Columbia Tribune All-Area Team as the pitching MVP, Phillips also earned all-state honors while going 9-1 with 59 strikeouts in 53 innings and a 1.19 ERA. he also batted .476 with 39 hits, 33 runs and 23 RBI.

Jamies Winston, Hueytown (Hueytown, Ala.), Pitcher - An all-around player, Winston was the Birmingham News Metro West Player of the Year. He batted .424 with 7 homers, 36 RBI and 15 doubles. He also took the mound for Hueytown and went 8-3 with a 1.92 ERA and 92 strikeouts.
Stephen Gant, Riverside (Decaturville, Tenn.), Pitcher - Named to the all-state team after posting a 15-0 record with a 1.17 ERA and 132 strikeouts. He also batted .496 with 11 home runs and 65 RBI.
Troy Conyers, El Capitan (Lakeside, Calif.), Pitcher - Besides batting .444 for the San Diego Section Division III champs, Conyers was 8-2 on the mound and earned All-San Diego Section honors.
Taylor Gushue, Calvary Christian Academy (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.), Catcher - A second team all-county pick by the Miami Herald, Gushue batted .530 for Calvary Christian with 35 RBI, 7 doubles and 11 home runs.
Christian Stewart, Providence Christian Academy (Lilburn, Ga.), Catcher - Made the All-Gwinnett County team by ripping 15 home runs and batting .545 with 57 RBI and 30 runs scored.
Stryker Trahan, Acadiana (Lafayette, La.), Catcher - Trahan made the all-state team and batted .434 with 43 hits, 37 runs, 39 RBI, 6 doubles and 10 home runs.
Tyler Thomas, Woodbridge (Woodbridge, Va.), First Base - A Group AAA all-state selection in Virginia, he led Woodbridge to 27 straight wins before falling in the state championship game. He batted .583 on the season with 46 RBI and 10 home runs.
Matt Olson, Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.), First Base - Made the All-Gwinnett County team after batting .444 wtih 52 RBI, 31 runs and 14 home runs. he also pitched and was 7-2 with a 3.71 ERA.
Addison Russell, Pace (Pace, Fla.), Infield - The Hitter of the Year by the Pensacola News Journal, Russell helped lead Pace to the 5A state title in Florida by batting .538 with 11 home runs and 36 RBI.
Gavin Cecchini, Barbe (Lake Charles, La.), Infield - Earned Class 5A all-state honors in Louisiana after batting .530 with 56 runs, 58 hits, 24 doubles, 10 home runs and 54 RBI.
Wander Almonte, Monroe Campus (Bronx, N.Y.), Infield - One of the top shortstops in New York, Almonte was named first team All-Bronx by the New York Post after batting .605 with 29 RBI, three home runs and 23 runs scored.
Wyatt Mathisen, Calallen (Corpus Christi, Texas), Infield - Moved to shortstop this year and earned Class 4A all-state honors. he batted .462 for the state runners-up with 49 RBI, 54 runs scored, 18 doubles and 8 home runs.
Rio Ruiz, Bishop Amat (La Puente, Calif.), Infield - The Lancers were ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division IV rankings most of the season thanks to Ruiz, who batted .528 with 34 RBI, 9 doubles, 35 runs scored, 4 triples and 4 home runs. Named to the All-Southern Section Division IV team.
Joey Gallo, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.), Infield - A member of the Gaels' state championship team, Gallo led the team in home runs with 15 while batting .474 with 41 runs, 54 hits, 62 RBI and 16 doubles.
Tate Matheny, Westminster Christian (St. Louis, Mo.), Outfield - Named to the St. Louis Post Dispatch All-Metro Team, Matheny is the son of former major league catcher Mike Matheny. He batted .551 with 59 hits, 9 doubles, 7 triples, 5 home runs, 45 RBI and 37 runs scored.
Lewis Guilbeau, Westlake (Austin, Texas), Outfield - The Newcomer of the Year in Central Texas by the Austin Statesman, Guilbeau also earned all-state Class 5A first team honors by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. He batted .466, had 39 RBI and scored 25 runs with 4 home runs.
Justin "Boomer" White, Memorial (Houston, Texas), Outfield - An All-Greater Houston selection and the District 18-5A Newcomer of the Year, White belted 9 home runs and also had 62 hits with a .408 batting average and 39 RBI for Memorial.
Kyle Carter, Columbus (Columbus, Ga.), Outfield - Named the Bi-City Player of the Year by the Columbus Ledger Enquirer, Carter boasted a 9-2 record with a 2.36 ERA as a pitcher while also hitting .410 with 9 home runs and 40 RBI for the Georgia AAA state champions.
Jesse Winker, Olympia (Orlando, Fla.), Outfield - A member of the Orlando Sentinel's All-Central Florida team, Winkler batted .561 on the season.
Chris Akmon, Saguaro (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Outfield - One of the leading hitters for the Class 4A-I champions, Akmon batted .500 with 55 RBI, 10 doubles and 11 home runs while earning all-state honors.
Jovan Hernandez, Rockwall-Heath (Rockwall, Texas), All-Purpose - The Player of the Year by the Dallas Morning News, Hernandez was also a Class 4A all-state selection. He was 5-0 as a pitcher but excelled at the plate where he batted .524 wtih 49 RBI, 9 home runs, 14 doubles and 54 hits. He takes a 41-game hit streak into next season.
David Thompson, Westminster Christian (Miami, Fla.), All-Purpose - Thompson led Westminster Christian to the 2A state championship in Florida and was named to the All-Dade County Team by the Miami Herald. He batted .486 with 19 home runs and 54 RBI while playing shortstop.
Kolbey Carpenter, West (West, Texas), All-Purpose - Selected as the Super CenTex Player of the Year by the Waco Tribune, Carpenter was also the District 7-3A MVP after going 10-2 with a 1.81 ERA and 78 strikeouts. He also excelled at the plate with 13 home runs, a .509 batting average, 62 runs, 64 hits, 21 doubles and 59 RBI.
Lance McCullers, Jesuit (Tampa, Fla.), All-Purpose - Helped lead the Tigers to the 4A state finals by batting .457 with 8 doubles, 30 RBI, 35 runs scored and 2 home runs. Named to the All-Suncoast Team by the Tampa Tribune.
Trey Williams, Valencia (Valencia, Calif.), All-Purpose - An All-Southern Section Division I selection as well as a first team pick by the Los Angeles Daily News, Williams batted .388 with 34 runs, 32 RBI, 10 doubles and 10 home runs.
MaxPreps Freshman All-American Baseball Team
Brennan Swindoll, Friendship Christian (Lebanon, Tenn.), Pitcher - An all-state second team pick in Tennessee by the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association (TBCA), Swindoll was 13-1 on the season with a 1.02 ERA and 108 strikeouts.
Gunner Baker, Carlisle (Price, Texas), Pitcher - Picked by the Longview Journal as its Newcomer of the Year, Baker batted .600 with 6 home runs and 47 RBIS. he had 20 doubles and 7 triples and also scored 50 runs. He was perfect as a pitcher, going 12-0 with 96 strikeouts and a 1.10 ERA in 63.2 innings for Carlisle. He was the District 20-A MVP.
Riley Gates, Snow Canyon (St. George, Utah), Pitcher - Earned Utah 4A all-state second team honors after helping lead Snow Canyon to the state playoffs, losing only to eventual champion Spanish Fork.
Ryan Colombo, Seaman (Topeka, Kan.), Pitcher - Named second team all-city in Topeka after helping lead Seaman to the Kansas Class 5A state championship. He was also batting .484 heading into the state tournament.
Ricardo Parra, Monroe Campus (Bronx, N.Y.), Pitcher - Received All-Bronx honorable mention by the New York Post after helping Monroe post a 46-2 record. He had a 9-strikeout performance in a PSAL playoff win over Kennedy.
Trey Ridenour, Beyer (Modesto, Calif.), Pitcher - All-District by the Modesto Bee, Ridenour was 7-3 on the season with 66 strikeouts and 25 walks in 55.2 innings pitched with a 1.89 ERA.
Joseph O'Donnell, Hoggard (Wilmington, N.C.), Pitcher - O'Donnell was 7-1 with a 1.79 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 47 innings pitched. He earned second team all-area honors.

Eder Erives, Montwood (El Paso, Texas), Pitcher - El Paso Times Newcomer of the Year, Erives was 8-2 on the mound with a 2.89 ERA and 50 strikeouts in 53.1 innings pitched. He also threw a no-hitter against defending 5A state champion Socorro.
Nick Ciuffo, Wando (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.), Catcher - An all-area first-team pick, Ciuffo batted .377 for the Warriors with 13 RBI and 7 doubles.
Jeremy Martinez, Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), Catcher - A starter for the Southern Section Division I champions, Martinez led the Monarchs in at-bats with 92 and was among the team leaders with 20 RBI, 32 hits, 7 doubles and 3 home runs. Batted .348 with 16 runs scored.
Jacen Nalesnik, Lehighton (Lehighton, Pa.), Catcher - An all-area choice, Nalesnik led the Indian with a .478 batting average that included 26 runs, 43 hits, 45 RBI, 13 doubles and 4 home runs.
Dominic Smith, Serra (Gardena, Calif.), First Base - An all-area pick by The Wave, Smith led Serra with a .597 batting average. He also had 28 runs, 36 RBI, 46 hits, 12 doubles, 4 triples and 3 home runs.
Tyler Blake, Franklin (Elk Grove, Calif.), First Base - Earned all-metro honorable mention honors by the Sacramento Bee, while batting .395 with 23 runs, 30 RBI, 6 doubles and 4 home runs.
Kramer Robertson, Midway (Waco, Texas), Infield - The Super CenTex Newcomer of the Year, Robertson batted .365 for the season and .500 in the playoffs.
Cavan Biggio, St. Thomas Catholic (Houston, Texas), Infield - Helped lead St. Thomas Catholic to the TAPPS 5A state championship by batting .364 with 25 runs, 20 RBI, 7 doubles and 5 home runs. The son of former Houston Astro Craig Biggio, who is also the St. Thomas Catholic coach.
Will Crowe, Pigeon Forge (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.), Infield - Named to the TBCA all-state second team, Crowe was 7-1 as a pitcher with a 1.15 ERA and 50 strikeouts. He also batted .476 with 5 home runs and 49 RBI.
Gosuke Katoh, Rancho Bernardo (San Diego, Calif.), Infield - One of the top hitters for the Broncos, who won the San Diego Section Division I championship, Katoh batted .430 with 44 runs scored, 52 hits, 23 RBI, 5 doubles and a home run.
Tyler Alamo, Cypress (Cypress, Calif.), Infield - Helped lead Cypress to the Southern Section Division II second round and was named to the All-Southern Section Division II second team.
John Riley, Willow Glen (San Jose, Calif.), Infield - The Rams went 27-1 thanks in large part to Riley, a third baseman who batted .408 with 39 runs, 40 hits, 30 RBI, 8 doubles, 3 triples and 5 home runs.
Kenny Meimerstorf, Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nev.), Outfield - Helped lead the Gaels to the Nevada 4A state championship including a big game in the playoffs against Galena where he was 4-for-5 with 7 RBI and two home runs. He finished with a .363 average, 42 runs, 42 RBI, 14 doubles and 9 home runs.
Brendan Douglas, Aquinas (Augusta, Ga.), Outfield - Led Aquinas to the A playoffs in Georgia by batting .526 with 11 home runs. He was named to the Augusta Chronicle all-area second team.
Luke Cureton, Indianapolis Cathedral (Indianapolis, Ind.), Outfield - A starter for the Fighting Irish who went 31-2 on the season, Cureton batted .353 with 22 RBI, 4 doubles and 4 home runs on the season.
Michael Darr, Centennial (Corona, Calif.), Outfield - One of the top performers for the Huskies, Darr earned All-Big VIII honors after batting .333 with 29 runs scored, 32 basehits, 17 RBI and 7 home runs.
Kirk Morgan, Mallard Creek (Charlotte, N.C.), Outfield - An all I-Meck first team selection, Morgan was among the state leaders in basehits with 38.
Billy McKinney, Plano West (Plano, Texas), Outfield - The Newcomer of the Year by the Dallas Morning News, McKinney batted .414 with 36 runs, 46 hits, 41 RBI, 11 doubles and 7 home runs for the Wolves, who reached the 5A semifinals.
