The Emerald Ridge Jaguars will venture away from home to square off against the Curtis Vikings at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. Emerald Ridge is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 12.1 runs per game this season.
On Friday, Emerald Ridge needed a bit of extra time to put away Puyallup. They walked away with a 5-2 victory over the Vikings. The win continues a trend for the Jaguars in their matchups with the Vikings: they've now won three in a row.
Alanna Wirtala made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She struck out ten batters over eight innings while giving up just two earned runs off nine hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
In other batting news, Abygale Redwine was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two runs and one double. Another player making a difference was Kenzie Stolmeier, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base, one double, and one RBI.
Meanwhile, Curtis was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against Bethel, falling 19-12.
Melanie Spivey was cooking despite her team's loss, getting on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Celeste Tavese also deserves some recognition as she snagged her first stolen base of the season.
Emerald Ridge pushed their record up to 10-4 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. The road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Curtis, their loss dropped their record down to 2-13.
Curtis' pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Emerald Ridge hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .423. It's a different story for Curtis, though, as they've only averaged .204. Will they be able to contain Emerald Ridge's hitters?
Everything went Emerald Ridge's way against Curtis in their previous meeting back in March, as Emerald Ridge made off with a 35-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Jaguars since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
