The Yutan Chieftains had already proven themselves in the regular season, and didn't miss a beat now that it's playoff time. Everything went their way against Oakland-Craig on Friday as Yutan made off with a 28-6 victory. The score was close at the half, but Yutan pulled away in the second half with 21 points.
Derek Wacker was his usual excellent self, rushing for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Jesse Kult and his 98 yards on the ground were also a key factor in Yutan's victory.
The team's defense also helped out by holding Oakland-Craig to a paltry 232 yards. A big part of that defensive dominance came down to Yutan's ability to keep the quarterback under pressure: the team laid the passer out five times before it was all said and done. The heavy lifting was done by Caleb Daniell and Owen Sutter who racked up four sacks between them.
When it comes to explaining why Oakland-Craig lost, one person who can't be blamed is Corbin Guill. Despite the final result, he picked up 125 receiving yards and a touchdown.
The victory (which was Yutan's sixth in a row) raised their record to 9-2. That said, the team wasn't facing the toughest opposition over that stretch, as it included 0-9 David City and 1-8 Tekamah-Herman (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 39.2% over those games). As for Oakland-Craig, their defeat dropped their record down to 9-2.
Yutan will be staying on the road on Friday to face off against Ord at 6:00 p.m. on November 10th. Ord is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune. Oakland-Craig does not have any more games scheduled as of now.
