Softball Recap: Surry County Beats Sussex Central for Their Fourth Straight Victory

Surry County came tearing into Tuesday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They put the hurt on the Sussex Central Tigers with a sharp 20-6 victory. The result was nothing new for the Cougars, who have now won four matchups by 13 runs or more so far this season.

Whitney Griffin made a splash while hitting and pitching. She pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was even better at the plate, going a perfect 4-for-4 with six RBI, two runs, and one triple.

In other batting news, Surry County got a big performance out of Aimee Frutiger, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with four runs. Another player making a difference was Gracen Riley, who earned four RBI and two runs.

Surry County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .516. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.

Surry County's win was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 5-5. The home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.6 runs over those games. As for Sussex Central, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Surry County will challenge Brunswick at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.71 runs per game on average), something the Cougars will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Sussex Central, they will head out on the road to take on Southampton at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Tigers' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Indians have averaged an impressive 8 runs per game this season.
