Wiregrass has enjoyed a two-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Evangel Christian Lightning at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Wiregrass posted their biggest victory since December 8, 2023 on Tuesday. They blew past Ezekiel Academy, posting a 67-35 victory at home. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest victory Wiregrass has posted against Ezekiel Academy since January 8, 2021.
Wiregrass' win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Christian Miller, who scored 18 points. Miller hasn't dropped below 15points for four straight games. Riley Treadaway was another key contributor, scoring 15 points.
Meanwhile, Evangel Christian had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 26.3 points), and they went ahead and made it four on Thursday. They blew past Rocket City 56-29 on the road. Given Evangel Christian's advantage in MaxPreps' Alabama basketball rankings (they are ranked 79th, while Rocket City is ranked 293rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Owen Bugnar was his usual excellent self, scoring 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Zion Thompson, who scored nine points.
Wiregrass' record is now 11-9. As for Evangel Christian, their win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 19-3.
Friday's game will pit two of the most dominant against one another: Miller and Bugnar. Miller has been dynamite this season: he has averaged 20.1 points. For his part, Bugnar has averaged 15.7 points.
Wiregrass ended up a good deal behind Evangel Christian in their previous meeting on Friday, losing 62-46. Can Wiregrass avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
