The Calallen Wildcats will face off against the Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial Eagles at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
Calallen took care of business in their home opener (and then some) on Tuesday. They blew past Victoria East 16-7. The Wildcats are really starting to get used to good results now that the team has won 31 straight dating back to last season.
Jordyn Thibodeaux looked comfortable as she struck out eight batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits (and not a single walk). What's more, she also gave up only zero walks, the fewest she's had since back in April of 2024.
At the plate, Brookelynn Meador was incredible, firing off two home runs, six RBI, and three runs while going 4-for-5. What's more, she also racked up four hits, the most she's had since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Kylie Butcher, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and two RBI.
Meanwhile, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial had to travel to play their first game of the season, but the final result was worth the trip. They were the clear victor by a 22-2 margin over Ray on Tuesday. The win continues a trend for the Eagles in their matchups with the Texans: they've now won five in a row.
Meredith Cavazos looked comfortable as she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit.
On the hitting side, Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial let Emilee Holmes and Desi Garcia loose on the outfield. Holmes went 4-for-5 with three stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI, while Garcia went 3-for-4 with one home run, six RBI, and three runs. The team also got some help courtesy of Jada Zepeda, who scored four runs and stole a base while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances.
Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .675. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Ray only posted an OBP of .294.
Calallen came up short against Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial in their previous meeting back in February of 2022, falling 5-1. Can Calallen avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
