The Lawson Lightning will head out to challenge the Pope John Paul II Knights at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The two teams are strolling into their contests after big wins in their previous games.
Lawson will roll into the game after a wild two-game stretch: they didn't score any runs two weeks ago, then bounced right back against Hume-Fogg on Tuesday. Lawson's pitchers stepped up to hand Hume-Fogg a 22-0 shutout. The high-scoring performance was a welcome turnaround for the Lightning's hitters, who had struggled in the games prior.
Isabella Clem made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Clem was also solid in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI.
In other batting news, Lawson let Makenzie Cotton and Joi Stewart run wild. Cotton scored four runs and stole Three bases. while going 3-for-3, while Stewart went a perfect 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, four runs, and four RBI. That's the most RBI Stewart has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Kendall Featherstone, who scored a run and stole Two bases. while going 2-for-2.
Meanwhile, Pope John Paul II entered their tilt with Father Ryan on Tuesday with two consecutive wins , and they'll enter their next game with three. Everything went their way against the Irish as they made off with an 8-1 victory. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest win the Knights have posted against the Irish since April 19, 2018.
Clara Grace Wingo spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits.
On the hitting side, Maddie Black and Lizzie Browning did most of the damage at the plate: Black scored a run while going 3-for-3, while Browning scored two runs while going 2-for-4. The team also got some help courtesy of Carmen Shick, who scored a run while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.
Pope John Paul II kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 11 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Pope John Paul II's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 3-1. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Lawson, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-2.
Wednesday's match will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Lawson hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .375. However, it's not like Pope John Paul II struggles in that department as they've averaged .357. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
