Owensboro Catholic is 0-7 against South Warren since June of 2017 but things could change on Monday. The Aces will welcome the Spartans at 6:00 p.m. Both teams are coming into the matchup red-hot, with Owensboro Catholic sitting on three straight victories and South Warren on 31.
On Wednesday, Owensboro Catholic got the win against Owensboro by a conclusive 13-2. The result was nothing new for the Aces, who have now won eight contests by nine runs or more so far this season.
Ava Mudd made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She pitched five innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. Mudd was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with one home run and three RBI.
In other batting news, Maddie Alvey was incredible, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted over her last five games. Anna Beth Hamilton was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two RBI.
Meanwhile, South Warren faced Greenwood in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Thursday. The Spartans walked away with a 6-1 win over the Gators.
Layla Ogden spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on three hits and racked up six Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 16 consecutive appearances.
On the hitting side, McLaine Hudson and Parker Willoughby did most of the damage at the plate: Hudson got on base in three of her four plate appearances with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double, while Willoughby got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one stolen base, two RBI, and one run. Hudson has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last four times she's played. Another player making a difference was Kinleigh Russell, who went 1-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
South Warren hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least three batters in 12 consecutive matchups.
South Warren's victory bumped their record up to 31-0. As for Owensboro Catholic, they now have a winning record of 11-10.
Monday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Owensboro Catholic hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .347. However, it's not like South Warren struggles in that department as they've averaged .480. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
