Softball Recap: Lockwood Wins Going Away Against Pierce City

Lockwood had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 11-run drubbing they dealt Pierce City on Thursday. The Tigers were the clear victors by a 13-2 margin over the Eagles. The result was nothing new for the Tigers, who have now won eight matchups by eight runs or more so far this season.

Kallie Griffin made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out 13 batters over five innings while giving up just two earned runs off four hits (and not a single walk). She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 12 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3 with two triples, five RBI, and three runs. Those three hits gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Lockwood got a big performance out of Reese Whitesell, who went 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Gracyn Clawson was another key player, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and one RBI.

Lockwood was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .435. That's the best batting average they've posted all season.

Lockwood has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 15-5 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.0 runs over those games. As for Pierce City, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-10.

Looking ahead, Lockwood will face off against New Heights Christian Academy at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The Cougars have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 15.57 runs per game on average), something the Tigers will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Pierce City, they will take on Exeter at 5:00 p.m. on Monday.
