The Montezuma-Cortez Panthers will venture away from home to square off against the San Juan Broncos at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Montezuma-Cortez is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 10 runs per game this season.
Last Tuesday, Montezuma-Cortez came up short against Durango and fell 7-4.
Michael Krupa was cooking despite his team's loss, going 2-for-3 with one home run and one double. Darren Daves also deserves some recognition as he hit his first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, San Juan gave up the first runs on Friday, but they didn't let that get them down. They walked away with a 12-9 win over Gunnison Valley. The high-flying hitting performance was a huge turnaround for the Broncos considering their one-run performance the match before.
Corbin Middlton was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits. Middlton was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with one home run and four RBI.
In other batting news, Talon Mendoza was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run, three RBI, and two runs. Cooper Palmer was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with one home run.
San Juan lost a few balls and finished the game with four home runs. That's the most home runs they've posted since the start of last season.
San Juan is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-4 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.2 runs over those games. As for Montezuma-Cortez, their loss ended an eight-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 8-3.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Montezuma-Cortez has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .469. However, it's not like San Juan struggles in that department as they've averaged .450. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Montezuma-Cortez suffered a grim 16-1 defeat to San Juan in their previous meeting back in March of 2024. Can the Panthers avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
