Basketball Recap: Cat Gavin Leads a Balanced Attack to Beat St. Andrew's

Hilton Head Island hasn't had quite the year their fans were hoping for to this point, but back-to-back wins may be a sign of good things to come. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the St. Andrew's Lions on Saturday, sneaking past 26-24. Given the Seahawks' advantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 139th in South Carolina, while the Lions are ranked 428th in Georgia), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Hilton Head Island's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Cat Gavin, who posted two points in addition to 12 rebounds and four steals. The dominant performance gave Gavin a new career-high in steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Aliana Richard, who earned six points.

Hilton Head Island's victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-9. As for St. Andrew's, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-9 record this season.

Hilton Head Island has already played their next contest, a 52-47 loss against May River on the 14th. As for St. Andrew's, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 51-18 defeat against Frederica Academy on the 14th.
