The Benedictine Bengals won the last time they faced the Shaw Cardinals, and things went their way on Saturday too. Benedictine walked away with a 57-46 win over Shaw. Given Benedictine's advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 171st, while Shaw is ranked 467th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Benedictine's win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from Matthew Torres, who scored 13 points along with six rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Torres grabbed two or more steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Kris Smith, who scored 13 points along with six assists and six rebounds.
Benedictine pushed their record up to 4-2 with that win, which was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 63.2 points per game. As for Shaw, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-3.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Benedictine will be home for the holidays to greet Garfield Heights at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Garfield Heights is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling. Shaw will be home for the holidays to greet Cornerstone Christian at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Cornerstone Christian has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 261 points over their last three games.
