This season hasn't been kind to The St. Martin Yellow Jackets, who are still winless after their eighth game. They were dealt a 42-6 defeat at the hands of Gulfport on Friday. While losing is never fun, St. Martin can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi football rankings (they are ranked 170th, while Gulfport is ranked 19th).
Cameron Romero threw for 50 yards on five of 12 attempts. Monclair Brave was his top target, picking up 34 receiving yards. On the ground, Kevin Reeder rushed for 29 yards.
Nicholas Williams was his usual excellent self, rushing for six yards and two touchdowns, while also throwing for 149 yards and a touchdown while completing 91.7% of his passes. Another player making a difference was Cooper Crosby, who rushed for 64 yards and a touchdown on only five carries.
St. Martin's loss was their eighth straight at home (dating back to last season), which dropped their overall record down to 0-10. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 12-1 Ocean Springs and 6-4 Harrison Central (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 55.5% over those games). As for Gulfport, the victory (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 6-4.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. St. Martin will take on D'Iberville at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. D'Iberville is coming into the contest on a three-game losing streak. As for Gulfport, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Ocean Springs at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Ocean Springs is also coming in off of a big victory, so somebody is in for a big reversal of fortune.
