Football Game Preview: Iona Prep Gaels vs. Monsignor Farrell Lions

Iona Prep is 9-1 against Monsignor Farrell since November of 2017 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Gaels will be playing at home against the Lions at 2:30 p.m. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Iona Prep is on a roll after a high-stakes playoff matchup on Saturday. Their defense stepped up to hand St. Anthony's a 42-0 shutout. The win continues a trend for the Gaels in their matchups with the Friars: they've now won four in a row.

Iona Prep got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Crew Davis out in front who rushed for 162 yards and one touchdown while picking up 10.1 yards per carry, and also picked up 75 receiving yards. With that strong performance, Davis is now averaging an impressive 105.5 rushing yards per game. Brennen Pressley made the highlight reel by snagging an interception and taking it all the way to the house.

Meanwhile, Monsignor Farrell faced Chaminade in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Lions simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Flyers 34-3. The score at the end of the third wound up being the final score as the Lions just coasted through the last quarter.

Monsignor Farrell's win came from a few key players Iona Prep will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Kevin Gumb Jr, who rushed for 193 yards and one score while picking up 7.7 yards per carry. What's more, he's the contest marked his fourth straight with at least 101. Bryce Moye was another key signal caller, throwing for 164 yards and a pair of TDs while completing 85.7% of his passes.

Iona Prep's record is now 9-1. As for Monsignor Farrell, their record now sits at an identical 9-1.

Iona Prep came up short against Monsignor Farrell in their previous matchup back in October, falling 28-21. Can the Gaels avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
