The Westwood Christian Warriors will be staying on the road on Saturday to face off against the Dwyer Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on January 13th. One thing working in Westwood Christian's favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
Two weeks ago, Westwood Christian didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Cooper City, but they still walked away with a 55-50 victory. Despite the victory, that was the fewest points Westwood Christian has scored all season.
Ethan Taylor was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 19 points and 17 rebounds. Taylor is absolutely dominating the rebound category: he's posted at least eight every time he's taken the court this season. Another player making a difference was Michael Vilmenay, who scored 14 points along with five steals.
Meanwhile, Dwyer came tearing into Thursday's match with nine straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 15.9 points) and they left with even more momentum. They strolled past Martin County with points to spare, taking the game 68-54. Given Dwyer's advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 17th, while Martin County is ranked 256th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Dwyer's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Amari Nealy, who scored 18 points along with seven rebounds and two steals. Nealy has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last seven times he's played. Jaironn Speights was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with six steals and five rebounds.
Westwood Christian's victory bumped their record up to 9-3. As for Dwyer, their win was their 13th straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 13-1.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Westwood Christian have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 35.8 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Dwyer, though, as they've been averaging only 32.9 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
