Basketball Game Preview: Hillcrest Christian Cougars vs. Discovery Christian

The Hillcrest Christian Cougars will take on Discovery Christian at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Hillcrest Christian has four straight victories, Discovery Christian has six straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

If Hillcrest Christian beats Discovery Christian with 82 points on Wednesday, it's going to be the squad's new lucky number: they've won their past two games with that exact score. Hillcrest Christian blew past Porter's Chapel Academy 82-47 on Friday. The Cougars have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight contests by 24 points or more this season.

Jaivyn Carter was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 24 points and 13 rebounds. What's more, he also racked up five steals, the most he's had since back in October of 2023. Another player making a difference was Jordan Johnson, who went 8 of 11 en route to 18 points and seven boards.

Meanwhile, Discovery Christian lost to Lamar Christian on the road by a 43-28 margin on Thursday. While losing is never fun, Discovery Christian can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Mississippi basketball rankings (they are ranked 262nd, while Lamar Christian is ranked 119th).

Hillcrest Christian's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 14-9. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 71.5 points per game. As for Discovery Christian, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-9.

Everything came up roses for Hillcrest Christian against Discovery Christian in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, as the team secured a 62-21 victory.
