Cottonwood scored a stunning upset when it knocked off Brighton, 20-0. At the time, the Bengals were ranked 14th in the state, while the Colts were 33rd.
The biggest upset of the week belonged to Cottonwood, who took down 14th ranked Brighton, 20-0. Aleni Aiono in the win.
Alta's dynamic duo of Chipper Lucero and Ammon Barker proved tough for Greg Coshaw's team to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Lucero threw for 303 yards and five touchdowns and Barker had 172 yards receiving. Logan Harrison helped Alta's passing attack out by catching two balls for 53 yards.
Austin Kafentzis provided a threat through the air and on the ground as Jordan defeated West Jordan. He completed 16 passes for 246 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for 79 yards. Kafentzis' favorite target this week was Nick West, who caught four passes for 69 yards.
Dezmond Carter was the most productive running back in 5A Region 3 this week. In 26 carries, he ran for 160 yards as the Beetdiggers defeated the Colts.
Alta's Lucero and Barker have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Lucero has thrown for 2815 yards this season, while Barker, a 6-foot-4 receiver, has 48 catches for 986 yards. Jordan's Kafentzis leads the league in rushing yards with 1494.
Bob Stephens' team's Barker is a few successful plays short of surpassing 1,000 yards receiving this season. He needs only 14 receiving yards against Riverton to hit that benchmark.
Cottonwood was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in the league. Earlier in the week, the Colts triumphed over Ryan Bullett's team 20-0.
