Northwest is a perfect 3-0 against Western since April of 2023 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Mohawks will head out on the road to face off against the Indians at 5:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Western will challenge a team with plenty of momentum: Northwest extended their winning streak to three on Thursday. Everything went the Mohawks' way against Minford as they made off with an 18-1 victory. Considering the Mohawks have won 12 matches by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.
Annika Carpenter made a splash no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up a single earned run in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Mollyann Runyon, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and two RBI. Laikyn Puckett was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Northwest kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in eight consecutive games.
Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Western, who bounced back after a loss on the road on April 9th. They were the clear victors by a 12-2 margin over South Gallia last Wednesday. The Indians' hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.
Like Northwest, Western also got a great game from a two-way player: Megan Whitley. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out six over six innings pitched. Whitley was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. Those RBI were her first of the season.
In other batting news, Aubrey Penwell was incredible, going 2-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and one double. Those runs marked the first that she has scored this season. Another player making a difference was Chelsey Ryan, who went 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Northwest's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-3. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 17.3 runs over those games. As for Western, their win (their first of the season) made their record 1-5.
Western's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: Northwest hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .479. It's a different story for Western, though, as they've only averaged .171. Will they be able to contain Northwest's hitters?
Northwest took their victory against Western in their previous matchup on April 9th by a conclusive 12-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Mohawks since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
