The Irmo Yellowjackets's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their tenth straight loss. They fell 50-39 to Westwood. While losing is never fun, Irmo can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 142nd, while Westwood is ranked second).
Irmo's defeat came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was AJ Brand, who scored seven points along with five assists and two steals. Brand is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last three games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jeremy Anderson, who scored seven points.
Westwood was led to victory by TJ Bell and Zion Brown. Bell scored 15 points, while Brown scored ten points along with seven rebounds and seven blocks. Bell has been hot recently, having posted 15 or more points the last six times he's played. Larry Brown was another key contributor, scoring nine points along with two steals.
Irmo has been struggling recently, as they've lost 12 of their last 13 contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-16 record this season. As for Westwood, the win (which was their tenth in a row) raised their record to 15-1.
Irmo will head out on the road to take on Lugoff-Elgin at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Lugoff-Elgin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 21 on Friday. As for Westwood, they will look to defend their home court on Tuesday against Richland Northeast at 7:30 p.m. Hopefully Richland Northeast focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 29 on Friday.
