The Coronado Thunderbirds fell on hard times earlier this season, but after back-to-back wins it seems like their luck might finally be changing. They secured a 28-24 W over Americas on Friday. For Coronado, this counts as revenge for the 38-35 loss Americas walked away with the last time they faced one another back in October of 2022.
Coronado was led to victory by Cason Golding and Ben Wilson. Golding picked up 121 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Wilson rushed for 104 yards.
Despite the defeat, Americas had strong showings from Mark Moore iii, who threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 12.9 yards per attempt, and Abdiel Rincon, who picked up 142 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Rincon was no stranger to the big play, lighting up the secondary with a catch that went for 61 yards.
Even if they lost, Americas' defense sure didn't make it easy: Coronado's QB was sacked four times before it was all said and done. Leading the way was Stephen Gutierrez and his two sacks.
Coronado's win bumped their record up to 4-5. As for Americas, their defeat dropped their record down to 5-4.
Coincidentally, the two teams will both be playing Socorro the next time they take the field. Coronado will host Socorro at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, while Americas will head out to face them at 4:00 p.m. on November 3rd.
