Football Recap: Carlsbad Skates Past Oceanside with Ease

Carlsbad won the last time they faced Oceanside and things went their way on Friday too. The Lancers took their contest with ease, bagging a 48-14 victory over the Pirates. Given the Lancers' advantage in MaxPreps' California football rankings (they are ranked 27th, while the Pirates are ranked 179th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Carlsbad was led to victory by Eli MacNeal and Ian Wall. MacNeal threw for 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns on only ten passes, while Wall rushed for 118 yards and two scores on only seven carries. The bulk of those rushing yards came from one huge play: a run that gained an incredible 70 yards. Darian Webb was another key player, picking up 13 receiving yards and one TD.

Despite the defeat, Oceanside saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Anthony Barquinero threw for 280 yards and a pair of touchdowns. A healthy portion of that aerial production (81 yards to be exact) went to Kymani Nua.

Carlsbad has started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. The wins came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they've averaged 45.5 points this season. As for Oceanside, their loss dropped their record down to 0-2.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Carlsbad will square off against El Camino at 7:15 p.m. on Friday. As for Oceanside, they will challenge Mission Hills at 7:15 p.m. on Friday.
