After a string of six wins, the Spencer Greenwave's good fortune finally ran out on Saturday. They were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 78-77 to Cairo. Having run the score up that high, both teams probably have some extra defensive drills coming up.
Several Greenwave players turned in solid performances, despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was KeyShaun Sampton, who scored 20 points. Another player making a difference was Kerry Griffin, who scored 12 points.
Cairo's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Keshen Spence led the charge by scoring 31 points along with six rebounds and five assists. That makes it three consecutive games in which Spence has scored at least a third of Cairo's points. Jykortnee Brown was another key contributor, scoring 18 points along with eight rebounds and six assists.
Spencer's loss ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 14-2. As for Cairo, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last nine games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-8 record this season.
Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Spencer will take on Kendrick at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Kendrick will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Georgia Rankings (they are ranked 508th, while Spencer is ranked 142nd). As for Cairo, they will head out on the road to face off against Hardaway at 6:30 p.m. on Friday. Hardaway and Cairo are at an even 5-5 over their past ten head-to-heads.
