After both having extra time off, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Comets and the Pomona Catholic Pacers will shake off the cobwebs and hit the field against one another at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Pomona Catholic will be up against a hot Sacred Heart of Jesus squad: the team just extended their winning streak to 11. The Comets were the clear victors by a 21-1 margin over St. Mary's Academy last Tuesday.
Trinity Godson and Alina Valenzuela made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, Godson struck out six batters over 2.2 innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Valenzuela tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than two walks in 11 consecutive appearances. At bat, Godson went 1-for-3 with three runs, one double, and one RBI, while Valenzuela went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBI, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Yelena Moran, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Another player making a difference was Genevee Hernandez, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one double.
Meanwhile, Pomona Catholic got the win against Entrepreneur last Thursday by a conclusive 18-2. That looming 18-2 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Pacers yet this season.
Pomona Catholic got a massive performance out of Kirra Hinojos, who got on base in all five of her plate appearances with four runs, one triple, and one stolen base. Julia Camacho was another key player, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, three RBI, and two runs.
Pomona Catholic always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .816. They are a perfect 3-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Sacred Heart of Jesus pushed their record up to 12-7 with the win, which was their eighth straight on the road. The road victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 16.4 runs over those games. As for Pomona Catholic, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 3-6 record this season.
Tuesday's contest might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Sacred Heart of Jesus has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .549. However, it's not like Pomona Catholic struggles in that department as they've averaged .575. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Sacred Heart of Jesus took their win against Pomona Catholic when the teams last played on April 1st by a conclusive 15-3 score. Do the Comets have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Pacers turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
