The St. Mary's Knights will head out to face off against the Combs Coyotes at 3:45 p.m. on Wednesday. One thing working in St. Mary's favor is that they have posted at least ten runs in their last three matchups.
While St. Mary's didn't have the best season last year (they finished 6-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They put the hurt on Sahuaro with a sharp 11-1 win last Saturday. The result was nothing new for the Knights, who have now won five games by six runs or more so far this season.
Meredith Schager spent all six innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on four hits.
On the hitting side, St. Mary's got a massive performance out of Giahni Ruiz, who fired off two home runs, three runs, and three RBI while going 2-for-4. Another player making a difference was Marianna Hernandez, who scored three runs and stole Two bases. while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances.
St. Mary's always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .528. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .517 or higher in three consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, after soaring to ten runs the game before, Combs was a bit more limited in their matchup on Monday. They lost 16-1 to Cactus Shadows.
Combs saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Elliana Snyder, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Combs dropped their record down to 3-6 with the loss, which was their third straight on the road. As for St. Mary's, their record now sits at 5-2.
Wednesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. St. Mary's hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .353. However, it's not like Combs struggles in that department as they've averaged .356. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
