In what's become a running theme this season, the Academy of the Holy Names Jaguars gave their fans yet another huge win on Thursday. They put the hurt on Wiregrass Ranch with a sharp 59-37 win. Given Academy of the Holy Names' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 74th, while Wiregrass Ranch is ranked 291st), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
It was another big night for Grace Gavin, who scored 31 points along with three steals and two blocks. As a matter of fact, that's the most points she has scored all season. The team also got some help courtesy of Lucy Morey, who scored 16 points along with two steals.
When it comes to explaining why Wiregrass Ranch lost, one person who can't be blamed is Claire Kelley. Despite the final result, she scored 19 points along with three steals. That's the first time this season that Kelley scored 15 or more points. Solei Sowell was another key contributor, scoring eight points along with eight rebounds and three steals.
The win (which was Academy of the Holy Names' fourth in a row) raised their record to 15-7. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.8 points per game. As for Wiregrass Ranch, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-10.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Academy of the Holy Names won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Winthrop College Prep Academy at 6:00 p.m. on January 26th. Hopefully Winthrop College Prep Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 23 last Monday. As for Wiregrass Ranch, they will be playing in front of their home fans against River Ridge at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
