Smithville has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will face off against The Falkner Eagles at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Mississippi (Smithville is ranked 248th, while Falkner is ranked 228th).
Last Thursday, Smithville came up short against West Lowndes and fell 38-26.
Smithville's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Carson Spann, who rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns, and Barker O'Brian who picked up 70 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Spann was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 51 yards.
Meanwhile, Falkner entered their tilt with Ashland with five consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with six. Falkner took their matchup at home on Thursday with ease, bagging a 50-16 victory over Ashland. The result was nothing new for Falkner, who have now won five matches by 34 points or more so far this season.
Falkner's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Gavin Wooley, who threw for 216 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 10.8 yards per attempt, and Chris Nunley, who gained 192 total yards and three touchdowns. Wooley hasn't dropped below three passing touchdowns for five straight games.
Smithville's defeat was their fourth straight at home, which dropped their overall record down to 2-8. Admittedly, the team was facing some tough opposition over that stretch, including 9-0 Vardaman and 7-3 Tupelo Christian Prep (their opponents had an average overall winning percentage of 63.3% over those games). As for Falkner, their win bumped their record up to 8-2.
Smithville strolled past Falkner when the teams last played back in October of 2022 by a score of 32-14. The rematch might be a little tougher for Smithville since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
