Basketball Recap: Sweeny Comes Up Short

Sweeny was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a hard 70-56 fall against the El Campo Ricebirds. The Bulldogs were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Ricebirds earlier this season, when they won 64-58.

Despite the loss, Sweeny still got an impressive performance from Dekaden Hall, who dropped a double-double with 15 points and ten rebounds. Hall has become a key player for the Bulldogs: the team is 3-1 when he posts at least ten boards, but 11-14 otherwise. The team also got some help courtesy of Jacory Maisonet, who posted four points in addition to five rebounds and three steals.

El Campo was led to victory by Augustus Respondek and Nathan Melchor. Respondek dropped a double-double with 13 points and ten boards, while Melchor shot 55% from the field en route to 30 points along with seven rebounds and four steals. With that strong performance, Melchor is now averaging an impressive 15.4 points per game. Another player making a difference was Konner Beal, who earned nine points.

Sweeny now has a losing record of 14-15. As for El Campo, their victory ended a four-game drought at home and bumped them up to 10-18.

Coming up, Sweeny will take on La Marque at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Bulldogs will need to watch out since the Cougars have now posted at least 55 points in their last 12 games. As for El Campo, they will square off against Columbia at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Roughnecks have been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last four games.
