Cross County recap October 29, 2013
Covington added to the longest winning streak in Cross County this week by beating National Trail, 42-0. The win marks ninth in a row for the the Buccs.
The Blazers fell to Covington 42-0 last week, the largest margin of any game. Garrett Griffin was a bright spot for National Trail, as he threw for 135 yards and ran for 22 yards in the loss.
Austin Hutchins threw for 122 yards and 3 touchdowns. He was 10-16 with 2 interceptions.
Jordan Newman was a passing and rushing force as Ansonia fell to Bethel.
Devin Mize was the best receiver in the league this week as Tony Sonsini's team fell to David Miller's team. Mize racked up 5 receptions for 71 yards. Josh Lee helped National Trail's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 23 yards.
Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Blazers' Griffin and Mize have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-4 quarterback Griffin has thrown for 2,627 yards this season, while Mize has 49 catches for 908 yards. The Tigers' Newman leads the league in rushing yards with 1,354.
National Trail's Mize needs only 92 receiving yards against Tri-County North to crack 1,000 for the season. He has recorded 49 catches for 908 yards this year.
A big matchup in Cross County this week will be when Miami East takes on Twin Valley South. At the moment, the Vikings are in second, while the Panthers are in fifth.
The league will see a high scoring game when the Panthers and the Blazers face off this week. The top two offenses in the league, Tri-County North comes in having scored 351 this season, while National Trail has scored 305. William Derringer's team scored 35 points last week as it defeated Twin Valley South.
The Bees made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 10,729 from 10,826. The advance stemmed from a 35-16 victory over Ansonia last week.
