LUDOWICI, Ga. - After three lead changes,
Atkinson County (Pearson, Ga.) took the lead for the win when they threw a touchdown with under a minute left in the fifth quarter and held on to upset
Long County (Ludowici, Ga.) 25-18 on Saturday.
After nabbing the lead on a
Vanda Vareen touchdown run, the Blue Tide went into halftime with a 6-0 lead. The Rebels scored the winning points with a passing touchdown that came in the fifth quarter.
The victory was a step in the right direction for Atkinson County, which was coming off a 27-0 defeat at the hands of McIntosh County Academy in its previous game. The loss was the third in a row for Long County. The win broke Atkinson County's three-game losing streak.
In a AA Region 2 game next week Long County (1-3) takes on Bryan County, and Atkinson County (1-3) will go up against Benedictine also in a AA Region 2 game.
