SAN LEANDRO, Calif. -
San Leandro (Calif.) took the final lead of the game on Saturday as
Stephen Johnson ran for a touchdown with with less than a minute remaining in the third quarter, bringing the team to victory over
Encinal (Alameda, Calif.) 35-14.
The Jets pulled ahead on a touchdown, and subsequently went into halftime leading 15-13. The Pirates took the lead to win the game on a touchdown run by Johnson in the third quarter.
Johnson dashed for two rushing touchdowns during San Leandro's triumph.
Encinal came in surrendering 14.4 points per game this season. Coming into the game San Leandro had allowed 22.8 points per game this year. A defensively strong SL kept EHS right around the 13.4 points it had been averaging per game.
The victory will ease some of the sting of San Leandro's close 25-21 loss to the Alameda school last season.
The defeat comes as a step back for Encinal, who notched a 27-26 victory over Castro Valley in its previous outing. The win brought San Leandro's winning streak to four games.
San Leandro (5-4) goes up against Bishop O'Dowd in a West Alameda County - Foothill game matchup next week, while Encinal (7-2) locks horns with Hayward also in a West Alameda County - Foothill game.
