Wilmington extended their winning streak to three on Thursday, bumping them up to 20-5. They put the hurt on the Bloom Blazing Trojan with a sharp 19-1 win. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won 14 games by six runs or more so far this season.
Meredith Marquardt made a splash no matter where she played. She tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (four). She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with three RBI and two runs.
In other pitching news, Taryn Gilbert looked comfortable as she tossed two innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in eight consecutive appearances.
Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Molly Southall, who fired off two home runs, seven RBI, and three runs while going 3-for-3. Those seven RBI gave her a new career-high. Nina Egizio was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base.
Wilmington always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .833. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.
As for Bloom, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four matchups. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-14 record this season. Having soared to a lofty 19 runs in the game before, they couldn't push the score so high this time.
On Bloom's side, Aryana Knaack made the most of her time in the batter's box despite the final result and went 1-for-2 with one home run.
Wilmington didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, an 8-5 victory against Reed-Custer on the 8th. As for Bloom, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Thornton at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. The Wildcats have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 21.8 runs per game on average), something the Blazing Trojan will no doubt try to take advantage of.
