The Liberty Lancers are taking a road trip to square off against the Discovery Canyon Thunder at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both teams are coming into the match red-hot, with Liberty sitting on four straight victories and Discovery Canyon on nine.
Liberty will bounce into Tuesday's contest after beating Air Academy, who they had gone 0-4 against in their four prior meetings. Liberty enjoyed a cozy 64-48 win over Air Academy on Tuesday. While the Lancers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-15), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Liberty got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Cameron Cunningham out in front who dropped a double-double on 15 points and ten boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Akai Council, who posted 12 points and five assists.
Meanwhile, Discovery Canyon beat Rampart 66-55 on Saturday. Given the Thunder's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 22nd, while the Rams are ranked 90th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Discovery Canyon's win came from a few key players Liberty will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Micah Rohacs, who went 7 of 10 on his way to 17 points and six rebounds. Those 17 points gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Mitchell Vorwaller, who went 5 of 7 on his way to 14 points and five rebounds.
Liberty's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-1. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 73.7 points per game. As for Discovery Canyon, their victory bumped their record up to 9-1.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as Liberty and Discovery Canyon are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Liberty hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 72.2 points per game. However, it's not like Discovery Canyon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 59.7 points. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
Liberty suffered a grim 62-39 defeat to Discovery Canyon in their previous matchup back in January of 2024. Can Liberty avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
