Softball Game Preview: East Greenwich Avengers vs. South Kingstown Rebels

The East Greenwich Avengers will head out on the road to face off against the South Kingstown Rebels at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. East Greenwich is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.8 runs per game this season.

East Greenwich is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Rhode Island's top teams: Johnston, who was ranked 18th at the time (East Greenwich was ranked 13th). The Avengers were the clear victors by an 11-3 margin over the Panthers on Monday. The Avengers have beaten the Panthers the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Panthers has come to flipping the script.

Kayleigh Chaiyabhat made a big impact no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out ten batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in six consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with two RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Brooke Fairbanks, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with three runs, one triple, and one RBI. Another player making a difference was Sarah Levy, who went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

East Greenwich kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Johnston only managed four hits.

Meanwhile, South Kingstown didn't have quite enough to beat Lincoln on Friday and fell 11-9.

East Greenwich's victory was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-5. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.5 runs on average over those games. As for South Kingstown, their loss dropped their record down to 6-11.

East Greenwich skirted past South Kingstown 1-0 in their previous matchup back in June of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Avengers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
