Basketball Game Preview: Boyd County Spartans vs. Elkhorn Valley Falcons

Boyd County and Elkhorn Valley are an even 5-5 against one another since January of 2016, but not for long. The Boyd County Spartans will be playing at home against the Elkhorn Valley Falcons at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday.

Last Thursday, Boyd County ended up a good deal behind West Holt and lost 62-47. The Spartans have struggled against the Huskies recently, as the game was their fifth consecutive lost matchup.

Boyd County's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Hudson Hoffman, who went 5 for 9 on his way to 14 points, and Charlie Adams, who went 6 of 8 en route to 15 points. The matchup was Adams' third in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Will Nelson, who posted six points.

Meanwhile, Elkhorn Valley was able to grind out a solid win over Creighton on Friday, taking the game 56-46. Given the Falcons' advantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 56th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 215th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Boyd County better keep an eye on Kellyn Ollendick. He was instrumental in Elkhorn Valley's win, dropping a double-double on 25 points and 18 boards. The team also got some help courtesy of Korbin Werner, who almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds.

Elkhorn Valley is on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven games, which provided a nice bump to their 11-3 record this season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 56.6 points per game. As for Boyd County, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-6.
