The Southeast Golden Buffalo entered their tilt with the Heights Falcons with four consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with five. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, Southeast made off with a 59-58 win over Heights. The victory was all the more spectacular given Southeast's disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 95th, while Heights is ranked third).
Heights' loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was T.J. Williams, who scored 20 points along with eight rebounds and five steals. Williams hasn't dropped below two blocks for four straight games. Another player making a difference was Jahlin Timmons, who scored 12 points along with five rebounds and five steals.
Even though they lost, Heights smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive rebounds they've managed all season.
Southeast's victory was their fifth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 9-7-1. Those good results were due in large part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 74.6 points per game. As for Heights, their loss ended a 14-game streak of away wins dating back to last season and brought them to 15-1.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Southeast will challenge Kapaun Mt. Carmel on Tuesday. Kapaun Mt. Carmel knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with flashy point totals in its past 16 contests -- so hopefully Southeast likes a good challenge. As for Heights, they will head out on the road to square off against North at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. One thing working in Heights' favor is that they have posted big point totals every time they've taken the court this season.
