Smithfield-Selma hasn't had much luck against Triton recently, but that could start to change on Wednesday. Having just played yesterday, the Spartans will head out on the road to face off against the Hawks at 7:30 p.m. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.
While Smithfield-Selma didn't have the best season last year (they finished 2-20), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. They secured a 62-57 W over North Johnston on Tuesday. The win continues a trend for the Spartans in their matchups with the Panthers: they've now won four in a row.

Smithfield-Selma got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Johnavon Cox out in front who shot 56% from the field en route to 18 points and five rebounds. Cox is on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 56% in the last seven games he's played dating back to last season. Another player making a difference was Shi'Quavis Benton, who went 5-for-6 on his way to 16 points and three steals.
Meanwhile, even if it wasn't a dominant performance, Triton beat Midway 58-52 last Tuesday.
Smithfield-Selma better keep an eye on Jamaury Taylor. He was instrumental in Triton's win, putting up 16 points in addition to seven boards and six steals. That's the most rebounds Taylor has posted since back in January. Kaden Matthews was another key player, scoring eight points and six boards.
Triton smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in 11 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Smithfield-Selma's record is now 4-1. As for Triton, their record now sits at 4-0.
Keep an eye on the arc in Wednesday's contest: Smithfield-Selma has been dynamite from deep this season, having made 63.3% of their threes per game. It's a different story for Triton, though, as they've only made 26% of their three-pointers this season. Given Smithfield-Selma's sizable advantage in that area, the Hawks will need to find a way to close that gap.
Smithfield-Selma was dealt a bruising 73-34 defeat at the hands of Triton when the teams last played back in December of 2024. Thankfully for the Spartans, Ro'Mello Pegues (who shot 80% from the field to rack up 18 points and four steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result? There's only one way to find out.
