Countryside and St. Petersburg are an even 5-5 against one another since February of 2019, but not for long. The Countryside Cougars will challenge the St. Petersburg Green Devils at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday. Countryside is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.1 points per game this season.
Countryside heads in on the heels of a playoff match on Saturday. They came up short against Clearwater, falling 57-34. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Cougars have suffered since December 5, 2024.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was Samantha Fernandez, who posted three points and nine rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Alyssa Wright, who put up 13 points and five boards.
Even though they lost, Countryside smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, St. Petersburg was not able to break out of their rough patch on Thursday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They lost to Countryside at home by a 56-42 margin.
Despite the loss, St. Petersburg saw an underclassman step up: freshman Shaw Summer dropped a double-double on 16 points and 14 rebounds. That was a full 38.1% of St. Petersburg's points, marking the fifth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Julie Mongello, who scored ten points.
St. Petersburg's defeat dropped their record down to 17-9. As for Countryside, their loss dropped their record down to 19-6.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Countryside has been crashing the boards this season, having averaged 29.8 boards per game. However, it's not like St. Petersburg struggles in that department as they've been averaging 37.4 rebounds. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we'll see if one team can grab an edge.
Countryside strolled past St. Petersburg when the teams last played on Thursday by a score of 56-42. Will Countryside repeat their success, or does St. Petersburg have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
