The Southern Wayne Saints will head out on the road to square off against the Fike Demons at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Southern Wayne will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps North Carolina Rankings (they are ranked 305th, while Fike is ranked 126th).
Southern Wayne scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They really took it to Smithfield-Selma for the full four quarters, racking up a 52-4 win at home. The win was just what Southern Wayne needed coming off of a 62-30 defeat in their prior match.
Southern Wayne found their leader in underclassman Kymora Stokes, who scored 18 points along with four steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Stokes has scored all season. Destiny Bullock was another key contributor, scoring seven points.
Meanwhile, Fike waltzed into their match on Thursday with two straight wins but they left with three. They strolled past C.B. Aycock with points to spare, taking the game 48-33.
Jewel Brewington was her usual excellent self, scoring 22 points. She continues to roll, besting her previous point total in each of the last three games she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Mallory Jenkins, who scored six points.
Southern Wayne has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matches, which provided a nice bump to their 6-8 record this season. As for Fike, they pushed their record up to 10-3 with that win, which was their eighth straight on the road.
This contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Southern Wayne have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 8.7 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Fike, though, as they've been averaging only 24.3 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Southern Wayne beat Fike 61-51 in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Will Southern Wayne repeat their success, or does Fike have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
